Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan

Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan manifested in 1781 A.D. in the village of Chhapaiya near Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Known in childhood as Ghanshyam Maharaj, He displayed extraordinary wisdom and spiritual qualities from a very young age. At the age of eleven, He renounced worldly life and became Nilkanth Varni, travelling across the Indian subcontinent for seven years in search of true spiritual knowledge.

After completing His pilgrimage, He accepted Ramanand Swami as His Guru and was later known as Sahajanand Swami. Through His teachings and divine guidance, He established the Swaminarayan sect and initiated 500 Paramhansas (saints) to spread spirituality, morality, and devotion.

Bhagwan Swaminarayan worked tirelessly to reform society by eliminating harmful practices such as sati, child marriage, and infanticide while promoting spiritual values like Nishkaam Dharma (selfless duty) and devotion to God. He authored the sacred text Shikshapatri and delivered spiritual discourses compiled as Vachanamrut, which continue to guide devotees.

Through His life and teachings, millions were inspired to live with faith, compassion, service to humanity, and devotion to God. His divine mission emphasized that the true purpose of life is service to humanity and devotion to the Almighty.

Mool Aksharmurti Gunatitanand Swamiji

Gunatitanand Swamiji Maharaj was born in 1785 A.D. in Bhadara village, Jamnagar district, Gujarat, with the birth name Mulji Sharma. After his initiation into the saintly order, he was named Sadhu Nirgunanand, and later became widely known as Gunatitanand Swamiji. He was considered the incarnation of Brahman and the first spiritual successor in the divine lineage established by Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan.

Gunatitanand Swamiji dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He played a significant role in strengthening the Swaminarayan tradition and built the temple in Junagadh. Through his life and teachings, he emphasized the principles of devotion, humility, and selfless service, which were central to the philosophy taught by Sahajanand Swami. He also helped define the concept of Sakaar Brahman and guided devotees toward spiritual discipline and faith.

According to Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s divine blessing that He would remain present on Earth through a God-ordained saint, Gunatitanand Swamiji became the first saint in this sacred lineage. Known for his deep devotion and complete detachment from worldly desires, he was regarded as the perfect servant of the Lord. Through his spiritual guidance and dedication, he inspired countless devotees and spread the divine message of Bhagwan Swaminarayan until his departure in 1867 A.D..

Brahmaswaroop Shree Shastriji Maharaj

Shastriji Maharaj, born in 1865 A.D. in Mahelav, Anand district, Gujarat, was known in his childhood as Dungar Bhagat. After his initiation into the saintly order, he was named Sadhu Yagnapurushdas, and later became widely known as Shastriji Maharaj due to his deep knowledge of Sanskrit scriptures. From a young age, he displayed remarkable devotion, humility, and spiritual strength, which impressed great saints such as Bhagatji Maharaj, who shared with him the profound spiritual knowledge of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan and Gunatitanand Swamiji.

Shastriji Maharaj dedicated his life to spreading the Akshar–Purushottam philosophy, the core teaching of the Swaminarayan tradition. He emphasized the dual form of worship of Shri Akshar and Purushottam, which teaches devotion to God along with His ideal devotee, Akshar, who guides devotees on the spiritual path. Just as a student needs a teacher to achieve academic success, a spiritual seeker needs the guidance of Akshar to realize and please Parabrahma, the Supreme God.

Despite facing strong opposition and hardships from society, Shastriji Maharaj remained firm in his mission. To establish and spread this philosophy, he built five magnificent shikharbaddh temples and installed the idols of Shri Akshar–Purushottam Maharaj in each. These temples became important centers for devotion and spiritual understanding. Before his departure in 1951 A.D., he appointed Yogiji Maharaj as his spiritual successor, ensuring the continuation of the divine lineage and teachings.

Brahmaswaroop Shree Yogiji Maharaj

Yogiji Maharaj, the fourth spiritual successor in the divine lineage of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, was born in 1892 A.D. in Dhari, Amreli district, Saurashtra, with the childhood name Jinabhai. From a very young age, he showed deep devotion and dedication to God. At only seven years old, he began serving in the local temple, waking up early every morning to perform duties such as bathing the idols, applying sandalwood paste, and performing aarti with great sincerity and love.

After his initiation into the saintly order, he was named Sadhu Gnanjivandas. Known for his humility, devotion, and selfless service, he became an ideal example of Nishkam Dharma (selfless service) and Nirman Dharma (humility). Even while serving as the head of the Akshar Mandir in Gondal, he continued performing simple services such as cooking and serving in the kitchen, demonstrating his deep commitment to serving others without pride or expectation.

Yogiji Maharaj inspired thousands of devotees through his teachings of “Samp, Suhradbhav, and Ekta”—unity, harmony, and mutual love. His ever-smiling and compassionate personality touched countless lives. He also initiated 51 educated youths as sadhus and played a major role in spreading the Swaminarayan faith beyond India. Through his life of devotion, humility, and service, he became a guiding spiritual force until his departure in 1971 A.D..

Divine Holiness Hariprasad Swamiji Maharaj

Hariprasad Swamiji, the fifth spiritual successor in the divine lineage of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, was born on 23 May 1934 in Asoj village near Baroda, Gujarat, with the childhood name Prabhudasbhai. From a young age, he was known for his intelligence, humility, and dedication to spiritual values. On Sharad Purnima, 10 October 1965, he was initiated into sainthood by Guruhari Yogiji Maharaj and was given the name Sadhu Hariprasad Swamiji. At the time of initiation, Yogiji Maharaj compared this diksha to that of Gunatitanand Swamiji, indicating the great spiritual role Swamiji would fulfill in the future.

Following the guidance and vision of Yogiji Maharaj, Hariprasad Swamiji devoted his life to spreading spirituality, devotion, and unity. To further this mission, he established the Yogi Divine Society, which became a platform for promoting spiritual growth and service. Through his teachings, he emphasized the principle of Atmiyata (spiritual harmony and affinity with all), encouraging devotees to live with unity, friendship, and mutual respect, inspired by the ideals of Samp, Suhradbhav, and Ekta.

Known for his universal love and compassion, Hariprasad Swamiji was regarded as a secular and universal saint who inspired people from all backgrounds to lead lives of devotion, morality, and service. His message encouraged individuals to remain spiritually harmonious regardless of circumstances and to remain devoted to God and their spiritual master. Through his guidance and the activities of Yogi Divine Society, thousands of youths and devotees were inspired to live righteous and virtuous lives until his departure in 2021 A.D..

Pragat Guruhari Prabodhjivan Swamiji Maharaj

Prabodhjivan Swamiji Maharaj, the sixth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, was born on 17 August 1953 in Vanthali, Saurashtra, Gujarat, with the childhood name Narotambhai Patel. He is the spiritual heir of His Divine Holiness Hariprasad Swamiji Maharaj. From a young age, he lived a life filled with spirituality and devotion. At the age of 18, he received Parshadi Diksha on 1 June 1972 and soon after Bhagvadi Diksha on 8 June 1972, when he was initiated into sainthood by Hariprasad Swamiji Maharaj and given the name Sadhu Prabodhjivan Swamiji Maharaj.

Since his initiation, Prabodhjivan Swamiji Maharaj has dedicated his life to serving his Guru and spreading spiritual values. Through his guidance and inspiration, he encourages youths to live balanced, positive, and addiction-free lives, helping them become responsible citizens and devoted individuals. His sincerity, humility, and dedication have inspired hundreds of thousands of devotees around the world, making him a guiding spiritual force for many.

Prabodhjivan Swamiji Maharaj continues to serve through many spiritual and social activities. He delivers discourses, has authored nine books, and has composed devotional bhajans, including the inspirational “Kariye Smruti Na Gaan,” which beautifully describes the life of Hariprasad Swamiji Maharaj. Along with spiritual leadership, he also performs simple acts of service such as cooking, cleaning, and administrative duties. Through his devotion, humility, and divine guidance, he continues to inspire countless devotees and carry forward the spiritual legacy of his Guru.
